Disaster Recovery Planning
The primary objective of a Disaster
Recovery Plan is to enable an organization to survive a disaster
to the organization's data processing, communications and
operations centre services and to re-establish normal business
operations in a timely and effective manner.
WHY DO I NEED ONE?

It is necessary to comply with Federal CCRA
regulations (IC78-10R3) section 19, Electronic Records. It
states that documentation describing physical, environmental
and system controls that exist to prevent unauthorized alteration
or loss of the records have to be maintained. This would include
flow charts and policy procedures manuals.
The goals of the Disaster Recovery
Plan should be to:
1. Identify weaknesses and implement a
disaster prevention program that is usable and can be updated
regularly.
2. Clearly identify the recovery procedures for the affected
areas, in plain English to allow for success in times of stress.
3. Minimize the duration of a serious disruption to business
operations to keep the company running normally.
4. Facilitate effective co-ordination of recovery tasks, making
sure that everyone knows their designated tasks.
5. Reduce the complexity of the recovery effort so that business
is resumed in a timely fashion.
The methodology used to develop the plan
emphasizes the following key points:
- Define recovery requirements from the
perspective of business functions.
- Document the impact of an extended loss
to operations and key business functions.
- Focus on disaster prevention and impact
minimization, as well as orderly recovery.
- Select project teams that ensure the
proper balance required for plan development.
- Develop a contingency plan that is understandable,
easy to use and easy to maintain.
- Define how contingency-planning must
be integrated into ongoing business planning.
- Define system development processes
in order for the plan to remain viable over time.
The primary objective of recovery planning
is to enable an organization to survive a disaster and to
continue normal business operations. In order to survive,
the organization must assure that critical operations can
resume/continue normal processing. Throughout the recovery
effort, the plan establishes clear lines of authority and
prioritizes work efforts.
In today's environment, the effects of long-term
operations outages may have a catastrophic impact. The development
of a viable recovery strategy must, therefore, be a product
not only of the providers of the organization's data processing,
communications and operations centre services, but also the
users of those services and management personnel who have
responsibility for the protection of the organization's assets.
The successful and cost effective completion
of such a project requires the services of a provider that
is expert at the collection, analysis, and creation phases
of Disaster Recovery Planning. GigaBlink Technologies Inc.
has gained a well-deserved reputation for such expertise and
experience as one of Canada’s premier Disaster Recovery
Plan providers.
